Jackie O’Donnell is a well known and much respected clinical hypnotherapist in Manchester and has been in practice since September 1996. Having been involved in personal development training, fitness, nutrition and weight loss for over 20 years becoming a hypnotherapist was a natural progression. Jackie qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist with the London College of Clinical Hypnotherapy and has attended many of their Master Classes to keep her skills up to date and keep abreast of new ideas or techniques. She is a full member of the British Society for Clinical Hypnotherapy and follows their Code of Conduct and Ethics precisely.
Like most hypnotherapists, Jackie uses a combination of hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming to help her clients make positive changes and enhance their lives. Prior to giving hypnotherapy to a client, Jackie takes time to explain hypnotherapy in detail, and answers any questions or concerns her clients may have.
In the majority of situations she focuses on goal oriented hypnotherapy which is generally very quick therapy. To help speed the therapy further Jackie sends all her clients a form which is relevant to their particular concern that they fill in and bring along to their appointment. This enables them to provide in-depth details and a history of their concern as well as their objectives in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of their own home, so that when they arrive they are generally more relaxed and ready for their therapy than they would be if they had had to focus on their problem and provide their history at the appointment. Also less time is needed on paperwork and for information gathering and the majority of the appointment is spent on therapy. Jackie also provides a recording of the therapy she gives each client for them to use at home to further speed up the benefits of hypnotherapy plus it enables them to feel more in control and involved in their success. Even after nearly 13 years, and having proudly passed the ten thousandth client some years ago, she still experiences a great sense of satisfaction and pleasure at the results clients can achieve through hypnotherapy.
“It can literally transform lives, whether it is living longer and healthier because of stopping smoking or overcoming a phobia of flying and being able to travel anywhere.”

Hypnosis is a pleasant relaxed state in which the conscious becomes distracted and the unconscious (also known as the subconscious) becomes open and receptive to suggestions and changes. The actual experience of hypnosis is difficult to describe as there are so many different levels. Some people cannot tell the difference between hypnosis and the normal waking state as it is neither being asleep nor awake and can feel as light as daydreaming. All hypnotic states are characterized by a tremendous state of relaxation, into which individuals allow themselves to enter so that therapy in the form of desired and beneficial suggestions may be given directly to the unconscious mind without the interference of the conscious mind.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to deliver therapy to the unconscious mind. Your unconscious is the storage area of the mind for habits, belief systems, automatic reactions and more. Hypnotherapy is a safe, quick and valuable therapy which helps your unconscious to resolve issues, overcome stress, poor habits and make positive changes.

IBS
IBS sufferers know only too well how stress and inappropriate dietary habits can contribute to the various symptoms of IBS. Many IBS sufferers have a tendency to be very caring and feel over responsible for others, they can be perfectionists who rarely take time to relax and they can lack confidence and feel worried or anxious. It is therefore important to provide IBS sufferers with therapy to relax, build confidence and overcome anxiety so they can control their levels of stress. If their IBS is due to sensitivity to certain foods it is also important to help them with motivation in this area.
Once these areas have been addressed I provide them with a very simple but powerful physical technique to use to gain control over their symptoms of IBS and reduce them by up to 85% as many other long term sufferers have done. Some have advised that after a while they forget about IBS.
Improve Confidence / Overcome Exam and Competition Nerves
Like those who suffer with phobias and panic attacks, people who suffer with lack of confidence and performance nerves often have a tendency to have repetitive negative thoughts about previous experiences where their performance has been poor or even disastrous. The problem with this behavior is that the mind responds to these thoughts with images or mini films of them continuing to perform in this poor way. In effect they are mentally rehearsing and getting better and better at performing poorly. With hypnotherapy we can help them to first develop general confidence/self-esteem and positive belief patterns and habits.
This will enable them to respond to a positive visualization which is given to them in hypnotherapy where they see themselves performing perfectly and achieving their goal, whether in an exam with them looking and feeling calm and all the right information popping into their mind to driving superbly in a driving test or swimming incredibly in a competition and winning the race.
Insomnia
Is often a symptom of stress or a habit brought on by the negative thought patterns during the day and especially at bedtime such as “I never get a good nights sleep”, “I bet I wake up in the middle of the night again”, “If I don’t get a good nights sleep I’ll be a wreck in the morning”, etc. These thoughts can cause a feeling of fear which can cause the body to release the stress hormones which trigger the body and the mind to be ready for action in the form of fight or flight.
Whether insomnia prevents you from getting to sleep or causes you to wake in the early hours of the morning, hypnotherapy can help you to relax, stop the fearful and negative thoughts in their track and focus on positive thoughts to create a feeling of calm and well-being and habits that promote a good, restful night’s sleep.
Migraine, PMT and Pain
These conditions are often brought on due to stress and the way the body reacts and responds to stress. Hypnotherapy can help with relaxation and development of a set of pain management tools to control and even prevent these debilitating conditions arising.
Stopping Smoking
Using hypnotherapy to stop smoking is recognized as one of the easiest and quickest ways of becoming a non-smoker. It helps you to develop the right mind-set to be able to overcome and beat the habits, withdrawal symptoms and the cravings of smoking, generally in only one session. Not only is it quicker and easier than other methods, it is generally much more pleasant for you and those around you. Prior to your appointment you will be sent and asked to complete a Smoking Cessation Form. This provides information on:
- Identifying the times, places and situations that trigger you to have a cigarette.
- What you consider will be the main benefits of stopping smoking.
- If you have stopped and relapsed previously, information on what triggered you to start smoking again.
As everyone is an individual, this information enables individual, detailed and fully personalized therapy to be given. Many clients have advised that the process of completing the form has helped them become more motivated than ever to quit. The following are often concerns when considering stopping smoking:
- Putting on weight
- Being stressed/bad tempered
- Excessive withdrawal symptoms/cravings
- Remaining a non-smoker in the future
All of these areas can be incorporated in the hypnosis to reduce and, in many cases, eliminate these concerns altogether. Generally one session is all that is needed. However, if you are stressed due to major life changes such as separation/divorce, bereavement, monetary problems, moving home etc. I recommend having a session for relaxation and stress reduction prior to stopping smoking. This will provide you with a positive and relaxing alternative to smoking in the form of a recording which you can use for a week or so before your smoking cessation appointment and after to relax and reduce stress at any time.
10 Essential steps for preparing to quit smoking
- Make sure you are stopping because YOU want to. Ideally for your health or to be free of the dependency, smell etc. Other factors such as a new baby in the family, new home, finances etc. can be part of it, but first and foremost it has to be for yourself.
- Arrange to avoid situations you know will prove difficult for 7 days after your therapy, such as the pub, the smoke room at work and social events that usually involve drinking and smoking.
- Ensure you really do want to stop smoking and come to your appointment with an open-mind. A desire to succeed is essential as well as a willingness to work with it.
- Decide which day you want to become a non-smoker and book your appointment in advance. This allows you time to plan and get used to the idea of becoming a non-smoker. Once you have a date, mentally begin to tell yourself that that is the day you become a non-smoker.
- Prior to your appointment, complete the Smoking Cessation Form.
- In the days leading up to your appointment prepare to stop by telling family and friends, this increases your commitment and enables you to obtain their support.
- Begin to get rid of the odour of smoking; buy a new toothbrush, clean the inside of your car; especially the ashtray, wash clothes/curtains etc.
- On the day, you are now ready to stop, you can smoke right up to your appointment if you wish, however, at your appointment, you must snap your cigarettes in half and throw them away along with your lighter, be committed.
- Be prepared to do your part. You will be provided with a recording of your personalized hypnotherapy, which I recommend you play once a day for the first 7 days after your therapy, this will enhance your therapy and help reduce/eliminate stress and mood swings.
- If you are particularly stressed or down at the moment, you must advise me, as I recommend you have a session for relaxation and managing stress prior to your Smoking Cessation session.
Stress / Anxiety / Negativity / Panic Attacks / Phobias
These are often symptoms not just of current situations but also of learned behavior due to lifelong conditioning, self-beliefs and past experiences.
People who suffer with these conditions often have a tendency to have regular and repetitive negative thoughts about previous experiences where they felt fear, anxiety and stress. The problem with this behavior is that the mind responds to these thoughts with images or mini films of them continuing to respond in the same way. In effect they are mentally rehearsing and getting better and better at feeling stressed and anxious in certain situations.

Weight Loss
Weight issues and obesity are not just about food, they are often a result of habits and beliefs formed during childhood, equally they can be symptoms of stress, lack of confidence and or low self esteem. Sometimes it is simply that we have fallen into bad habits due to a busy lifestyle. Hypnotherapy can help to re-programme your mind so that you can make the specific changes that are necessary for you to reach your goals.
My programme for weight management is based on developing the right mindset and being equipped with the appropriate tools and knowledge and includes:
- Hypnotherapy that can be directed at any of the following – individually or any combination according to your specific needs:-
- Eliminating totally or reducing problem foods or drinks such as chocolate, sweets, fatty foods, salty snacks, fizzy drinks, alcohol etc.
- Controlling snacking and eliminating binge sessions.
- Encouraging healthy eating – moderate portion sizes, healthy food choices, eating slower and eating for genuine hunger not boredom or other emotional reasons.
- Motivation for exercise.
- Developing the “right” mind set by controlling stress and depression.
- Plus increasing willpower, motivation, confidence and self esteem.
- A copy of my Low Fat, Moderate Carbohydrates and Protein Weight Management Programme (which is helpful for a healthy heart and eating to reduce risk of some cancers, diabetes, osteoporosis, HBP etc.) It is a 30 page manual providing clear and easy to use information on weight loss through a healthier lifestyle, along with further guidelines for maintenance.
- Recording of your hypnotherapy session to enable you to continue your therapy in your own home between appointments. This reinforces the therapy, reduces the number of appointments needed and produces benefits even quicker as well as maintenance for a healthier lifestyle and weight.
Number of appointments required varies depending on the individuals needs, when stress/depression and low self esteem are issues these generally need addressing in the first session.

At Last! A great night’s sleep.
As a therapy clinic, we see an incredible amount of ladies, who come to us for stress and insomnia. Often, they are in a state of complete exhaustion, due to months of insufficient sleep. While therapy helps deal with the psychological side, we were acutely aware that for many, there was an underlying physical cause.
Many of these ladies were on the change, often with hormonal issues. One of the terrible side effects, is wild swings in body temperature.
Often they would go to bed ice cold, but wake up in a lather of sweat over and over again during the night. Finally, we have an answer to their prayers. This amazing unit acts a little bit like personal climate control. When you are too cold, it heats you up slightly and when too hot, it cools you down. It does this by thermostatically maintaining the ideal temperature through the mattress topper pad. You don’t have to turn it up or turn it down, it will adjust itself to bring you back to your preferred temperature.
Here’s what a customer/patient has to say about her unit:
This device has been a lifesaver for me. I used to wake up during the night and throw the covers off, then wake up cold and pull them back up again. This could happen five or six times a night. Now, my unit is set to my ideal temperature and I simply sleep right through. The difference it has made to my quality of life is unbelievable.
If you have problems with getting too hot or cold during the night, this device is the answer you’ve been waiting for.

FAQ
“Is Hypnosis Natural?”
Yes, we are all regularly in and out of hypnosis in the form a light trance many times each day. For example when we daydream, and during the periods just before and just after sleep we are in light trance. Even when we become transfixed on something such as the TV, reading, staring out over a beautiful view we are often in a light trance.
“Will l lose control – I wouldn’t want anyone controlling my mind?”
No you can’t be controlled or manipulated. In hypnosis you are still conscious and you are in control. You can still hear, see, feel, smell, taste and speak. If you are given a suggestion which pleases you and which seems emotionally and morally acceptable, you will accept it. If it isn’t appropriate for you, you will reject it. Your unconscious mind is your protector and will not accept suggestions which are inappropriate for you.
“Will I be fast asleep or out cold?”
In hypnosis you are neither asleep nor unconscious. In fact, you are fully aware and focused, and will hear and remember everything that is said. Client’s are often more aware of what is taking place than usual.
“Will I be made to do something I don’t want to do?”
You are completely in control at all times. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will, and even when hypnotised people can still reject any of the suggestions given if they are not appropriate.
“What if I can’t be hypnotised?”
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind and one that we all experience in a light trance form very often such as when we daydream, when we are lost in our own thoughts, even when we are absorbed in reading or watching TV. It is believed that 85% of people can be readily hypnotised provided they want to be and feel comfortable with the therapist they have chosen.
“Is hypnotherapy safe?”
When administered by a skilled, professionally trained hypnotherapist, hypnotherapy is completely safe and there are no harmful side effects. It is often helpful when other methods have failed and the benefits are long lasting and often permanent. However, if you have a mental health history it is essential that you consult your GP and or psychiatrist as hypnotherapy could be inappropriate for you.
In 1955 the British Medical Association endorsed the practice of hypnosis in Medical School education. It has since been used by many medical and dental practitioners. In fact I have spoken with a number of women in their seventies who, as young women had been given therapy by their doctors to help them with childbirth.
